Cooking Up Better Teams: How Food Elevates Team Building

Not every team building activity really stays with you. Some are fun in the moment, some feel like just another thing on the calendar, and a few actually leave people talking about them afterwards. The ones that usually stand out tend to have something different about them. They feel easy, engaging, and natural. And somehow, food always seems to do that.

I’ve been part of various workshops, and most of them usually follow a structure. There’s a plan, clear instructions, and a specific outcome everyone’s working towards. Cooking sessions feel different. They’re a little messy, a little unpredictable, and honestly, that’s what makes them work so well.

At the beginning, there’s always that awkward phase where nobody really knows what to do. Some people hang back, some try to take charge, and some just laugh their way through it. But after a few minutes, everyone settles in. People naturally start finding their roles without even thinking about it.

I think part of why I enjoy it so much is because of what cooking feels like outside of work too. At home, cooking is one of the few things that genuinely helps me switch off. It’s simple, calming, and strangely immersive. You start chopping or mixing something, and before you know it, you’re completely focused on that moment. Bringing that same feeling into a team setting changes the whole atmosphere. People loosen up. Conversations feel easier. The pressure disappears a bit.

What’s interesting is that teamwork still happens very naturally. Nobody needs to force collaboration because it just unfolds on its own. Some people organise, some focus on details, some experiment, and others just keep the energy going. Everyone contributes differently, but somehow it all comes together.

And honestly, the best part is usually everything happening in between. The small mistakes, the last minute fixes, the confusion, the random ideas that somehow work out. There’s always a little chaos, but that shared problem solving is what makes people connect. When something finally comes together, everyone feels that small sense of achievement together.

By the end of it, it never feels like you’ve just completed another corporate activity. People are laughing more, talking more freely, and carrying those moments with them afterwards. It feels less like work and more like a shared experience.

That’s what makes food based team building different for me. It’s not only about teamwork or communication. It’s about being present, letting go a little, and creating something together that people genuinely remember.
