In today’s fast-paced world, where deadlines and distractions consume much of our energy, the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai offers a refreshing pause. Ikigai, often described as the intersection of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for, is about finding your purpose and living with meaning.
During a recent one-day Ikigai session, I witnessed first-hand why it matters more than ever. Some participants treated it as just another training—coming and going, ticking the box. But for those who immersed themselves, the experience was almost transformative. You could see their eyes light up as they reconnected with theirpassions and values.
One simple yet powerful exercise we did was slowing down with a cup of tea. Instead of rushing, participants were asked to sip slowly and engage in a deep conversation on their favorite topic. For 30 minutes, people truly listened, shared, and connected—something we often miss in our hectic routines.
Another exercise involved planting a sapling. Alongside the soil, participants placed small notes of their most important goals—things that gave meaning to their lives. Caring for the plant every day became a symbolic reminder of nurturing one’s purpose.
The highlight was, of course, the Ikigai framework itself. Those who managed to define their Ikigai radiated a newfound clarity. It wasn’t just a concept—it was visible in their expressions, like a spark had been reignited.
The lesson is clear: adopting Ikigai isn’t about grand overhauls but about slowing down, reflecting, and aligning our daily lives with what truly matters. In the chaos of modern living, it is these small but intentional steps that help us feel alive, purposeful, and fulfilled.
Why is this so relevant today? Because most of us are running on autopilot—moving from one meeting to another, answering endless emails, and hardly pausing to reflect on what truly matters. Ikigai forces us to step back and ask deeper questions: What do I really enjoy doing? What am I naturally good at? How can I contribute meaningfully to the world around me? And how can I make a livelihood from it? These four circles of Ikigai don’t just overlap on paper; when they come together in life, they create a profound sense of balance.
In our session, many participants admitted that they rarely give themselves permission to slow down. The tea exercise reminded them that mindfulness isn’t about meditating on a mountaintop—it can be as simple as sipping slowly and being present with another person. The planting activity struck a deeper chord—it wasn’t just about setting goals but about symbolizing growth and responsibility. Each time they water the plant, they’re also nurturing their aspirations
The most beautiful moment was watching people articulate their Ikigai. For some, it was a career shift they had been postponing. For others, it was about strengthening personal relationships or giving back to their community. What stood out was that Ikigai is not a one-time discovery; it’s a journey of constant reflection and realignment.
As organizations, encouraging employees to find their Ikigai can create more engaged, creative, and fulfilled teams. And as individuals, adopting Ikigai is about gifting ourselves the clarity to live a life that feels not just busy—but meaningful. In a world that glorifies speed, Ikigai teaches us the art of depth.
