Grow as One - Unleashing Creativity & Collaboration Through Film Making
Korelate Learning curated a three-day team-building offsite for Abbott India Finance, centered around the customized activity “Showbiz,” a movie-making challenge designed to break the linear thinking patterns typically associated with finance professionals. The event combined creative storytelling, problem-solving, and collaboration, tied to the overarching theme “Grow as One,” which encouraged teamwork despite competition.
The Abbott India Finance team, like many finance professionals, primarily approached challenges with a rigid, number-driven mindset. The team struggled with creativity, problem-solving from diverse perspectives, and fostering collaborative relationships, especially in competitive settings. They required an impactful experience that could shift their thinking, open up creativity, and enhance their ability to collaborate while still driving results.
To address this challenge, Korelate Learning designed a comprehensive three-day experience, integrating various activities to unlock creativity, foster problem-solving, and build collaboration. The flow was as follows:
Day 1: Creativity & Foundation
- Improv Innovators Ice Breaker: To loosen up the participants and ignite creativity, this activity set the tone for thinking outside the box.
- Tipping Point Activity: This strategic challenge highlighted the importance of approaching problems from multiple angles and introduced the 4M framework to inspire innovative thinking.
- Showbiz Introduction: Teams were introduced to the main activity of making a short film. Themes were tactfully chosen to align with Abbott’s organizational goals, encouraging participants to think creatively and tell stories reflecting key business values.
- Movie Planning: Each team conceptualized and developed their movie idea, with tasks including budgeting, scriptwriting, and scouting for locations and props.
- Prop & Equipment Auction: A competitive yet fun activity where teams bid on props, locations, and camera equipment to plan their movies effectively, sparking cross-team strategy and banter.
Day 2: Execution & Production
- Shooting the Films: Teams worked collaboratively to film their movies. Each team had access to Korelate’s editing stations, where a director from each group gave a brief to Korelate’s professional editors to finalize their films. The energy was high as teams managed the creative, logistical, and technical aspects of filmmaking.
Day 3: Reflection & Integration
- Domino Challenge: A collaborative activity designed to relax the competitive energies built over the previous days. Teams realized the importance of collaboration and the fact that they were working toward a common goal.
- Debrief on “Grow as One”: Key insights were discussed:
- Think differently—solving today’s problems requires new, innovative approaches.
- Every perspective matters—diverse inputs drive better outcomes.
- Build collaborative relationships—competition doesn’t preclude teamwork.
- Agree or disagree, but commit—aligning on decisions is critical for success.
The event concluded with a Gala Night showcasing the final films. An awards ceremony followed, where teams were celebrated for various categories like Best Actor, Best Movie, and Best Script, reinforcing the fun yet competitive spirit.
The three-day experience led to a significant shift in the team’s approach to problem-solving and collaboration. Participants learned to embrace creative thinking, demonstrated enhanced teamwork, and realized the importance of looking beyond numbers. The combination of competition and collaboration in a structured, fun environment allowed the team to understand the bigger picture—working together towards a unified vision, which was key to the “Grow as One” theme. Team dynamics improved, and participants left with a renewed sense of energy and creativity.
